I had a great weekend a few days ago, at the Copacabana beach near the Gosford (no, not the one in Brazil), almost two hours drive from Sydney Eastern suburbs. The weather is nice, the beach is very nice, and the houses we rent are very very nice.
It is almost a glimpse of heaven.
We went there as part of the MBF weekend away. Thanks should definitely go to Tim for getting everything planned and executed, and Amanda for organising the food. It was the Mandarin group's very first weekend away, and I hoped that it would not be our last.
The topic for weekend away is on "Prayer" -- we looked at how prayer related to our trinitarian God, and how we have been taught to pray in the Bible. To be honest I think I actually learnt the most from reading Goldsworthy's "Prayer and Knowledge of God", which I read and reviewed for the weekend away. It has been a chanllenge to me to put "God's will" in my pray life. Instead of asking pragmatic questions, I really need to think about how to make my prayers an expression of knowledge of God.
I guess describing it as "glimpse of heaven" is not just about the weather, the scenery, the beach and the relaxation. In some sense it is about people of God working together to proclaim his glory. It is about how people serve each other, not being inward looking, and doing their best as disciples of Jesus. It is about how redeemed sinners make 180 degree turn to live a renewed life. Amazing -- and that was what I have experienced in this weekend away and other Christian camps and conferences.
And that pretty much reflected what we have learnt in 1 John Bible study on Sundays.
1 John 5:9 (ESV) In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
Praise be to the Lord.
