I was getting too bored and tired last week, so my mind drifted off and tried to install and run an IRC server on my Linux box, for those people from FOCUS Net who have been requesting on-line chatting service over the years. I downloaded and compiled:
- Undernet IRC daemon 2.10.11.04 - this is the main IRCd that I am using.
- srvx IRC services 1.1.3 - it provides services like NickServ and ChanServ.
- Eteria IRC client 1.0.2 - that's the Java applet client for the website.
It took me a while to get everything configured properly, as my previous IRC experience is almost nil. But it is still better than writing things from scratch - don't you just love open source software. Here's the result:
I'll be hanging in #chat and #mbf most of the time, but don't be surprised if I don't respond to you. Now we do have the service - just need to wait for the chatters.
