Unix? Oops, I Have Just Committed A Crime

Will I be sued when I typed up that 4 letter word that starts with 'U' and ends with 'X'? Apple used that in their marketing material for Mac OS X, and The Open Group is now suing them for unlicensed usage of the Unix trademark. On Open Group's website, it claimed that SCO does not have the ownership over the trademark of Unix (which I agree), as they claimed that even though Novell has sold the source code of the original Unixware to SCO back in 1994, they have simultaneously transferred the rights to the Unix trademark and specification to the Open Group. And now, they are suing one of my favourite tech company for their mis-use of the term UNIX. Un*x based They wanted Apple to pay a fee to continue use the term "Unix Based", as well as having Mac OS X taking a compliance test. At the same time, Apple argued that they are using the term Unix in a generic way that identify or describe the feature of Mac OS X...

In a related news, SCO is planning to revoke IBM's license to Unix this Friday unless IBM settles with SCO's claim that IBM has inserted Unix code into Linux. The dead line is this coming Friday, and if the case is not settled, AIX will not be validated with a proper Unix license. The SCO saga has been going around for weeks, and everytime it comes up in the news it gives me headache...

The tech world is just getting weird. Having developed/administered SCO OpenServer for 7 months before, I have no doubt that it is a product that has no future. Who would buy a PC based Unix product when Linux/xBSD has been so strong in these platforms, at virtually no price at all? And you won't buy a Unix product on the x86 platform if you are thinking of scalability - try Sun/HP/IBM! Having played few different Unix-based or Unix-like operating systems, OpenServer is probably one of the worst Unix product that you can still buy on the market. Let's hope that it'll end soon... :)

Updated 4:12pm: Saw this piece in ESR's website - Master Foo discourses on the Unix Nature. A big too much Zen for me, but it is very interesting...

UNIXTM is a registered trademark of The Open Group in the United States and other countries. (just to be safe :)
