Internode Outage in NSW

13 hours, and it is still down...

Two days ago I officially got connected with the Internode - bought the over-priced D-Link DSL-300 modem from them in the hope of being trouble-free. It was easy enough to set up. Plugin the modem to the wall, add the in-line filter to the other phone devices, connect the modem to my spare NE2000 PCI card on my server/router box, ifconfig the IP address they gave me, and bang! It works! Thank you 'Nodes!!

Actually, setting up Linux to do the routing is a bit tricky. I planned to keep my Bigpond Direct 56k dialup account for a while when I roll over all the services from BP to 'Node. I changed all my DNS settings, reloading the master to have the slaves picking up the new changes, and cancel all my backup services with Telstra. However, because now this box is multi-homed, I need to do some source routing. It did take me quite a while (well, slept at 2am yesterday) to have everything going, including compiling advanced routing into Linux kernel, reading through the iproute2 HOWTO, and played around with the 'ip' command...

But what disappointed me was the NSW/Vic Telstra outage happened yesterday afternoon that directly affected Internode customers (me included). I went home from work yesterday, and found the network is not working again - so I ended up spending the night trouble shooting the problem, instead of working through the Ezekiel bible study as I planned. I should have checked the Whirlpool forums first because I won't spend time fixing it if I know it was not my fault. Anyway, 13 hours has passed, and it is still not really fixed. I have to drop MTU on the ethernet to around 800, and then set the default route to go back to BP Direct modem...

This is just outrageous. BP Direct modem connection might be slow, but at least it is more stable than the fast ADSL connection that does not work.

<05:17pm> Nearly 24 hours has passed since the first fault report, the ADSL connection is still not fully fixed. However, web-serving from this box seems to be okay - no major slow-down so far. Probably because of the adjusted MUT setting, but well, as long as the sites are up, I should not complain. :)

<05:50pm> Okay okay. It is now fixed. Thank you Internode and Telstra!
