Open MicroBlogging on WordPress, Anyone?

I have been trying to install Laconi.ca so I can break free from Twitter, but haven’t really got around to it. Then here comes the thoughts for today — why there isn’t a Open Micro Blogging plugin for WordPress, so I can just

  • Write a short 140-character micro-blog-post, and then assign it to a special category.
  • It then pings all microblogging servers with my followers on it to update their message queue.
  • WordPress can also take incoming requests and then populate my message queue with those whom I follow.

I guess things like Twitter-API emulation, XMPP integration, etc can all come later, so I just need one single WordPress installation to do both my regular blogging and my micro-blogging. Or maybe such plugin already exists?

I might actually sit down and look at how easy it is to implement something like this — if I have the time (i.e. no I don’t have time to do it). Going to Microsoft Tech.Ed 2008 for the next 3 days to be brain-washed by the evil empire because somehow work signed me up for it. Really excited… Not! That means I’ll also miss out CityBibleForum tomorrow :(

I’ve talked with some folks about a potential WordPress plugin to support Open Micro Blogging (OMB). I think there’s some definite interest, but so far no one with the time to get the code up and going has come forward.

What you really want – well, OK, what I really want – is to replace your second bullet with an API into something like “hellotxt.com”, which already has (almost) all the services I want. I really don’t want to have to keep signing up for more and more extraneous bridging services.

Not sure what your third bullet is saying – you want the same plugin to push incoming Tweets into your blog posts? Sounds a bit hairy to me. Or do you want them to show up in a Twirl-like sidebar? Don’t really see the point: they’re writing for you to read, and your blog is written for others (me) to read – I don’t particularly want to read their Twitters on your blog.

Just my happy little thoughts…blog when you finish the plugin, though – I’ll probably love it!

@Joseph — yes I think having a plugin that supports “open standard” (although Open Microblogging was a one man job at the start) would definitely be interesting for the WordPress community. Pinging/federating is not hard, but being able to subscribe other people’s presence and have them pinging you would be more challenging.

Easiest way is just to install your own copy of Laconica and get WP to send request to that instance (which then relay the presence to other installations). Your own Laconica will then take incoming messages instead of WP.

@Steve — try to read up on Open Microblogging :)

I am working to modify wordpress to add micro-blogging feature. It will be actually for site owners who want their users with a blog. Is laconica a good micro-blogging open source?

I’m VERY interested in this. Right now I’m using tWPtter, but it’s messing up more than it’s giving me. I ideally want a feed for the microblog in my sidebar, and ONLY there. I want to use it as a little streem of consciousness miniblog that I can update easily from the dashboard.

I can put a Twitter feed on there, but then I can’t access it from the dashboard.

So, please keep developing this, and I’m going to put a link to this someplace where I can keep checking back.
