Hi, very helpful site, many thanks from over here in Scotland. My D620 right hinge broke, I replaced them as a pair with ease.

After reading some of the previous posts, and replacing mine, could I just caution against using a lubricant such as WD40, unless you're sure the hinges really have seized up?

When you hold the new hinges in your hand, it is quite normal that you cannot open and close them. It is only once you have them in situ, and you have the additional leverage due to the laptop lid attached, that they are able to open and close. The last thing you want to do is make them loose and flexible before you even start.

Also, on my D620 the bottom part of the hinge (that sits inside the body of the laptop) is actually retained by 2 small screws, one at the rear of the laptop and one on the underside of it. Same on both Left and Right. So it does not just fall out by turning the base upside down.

Regards

Thanks for the good information that was useful to me. Given that Dell no longer supplies these hinges I bought some on eBay. As far as I can see most eBay sites are selling the hinge sets (left and right) from the same manufacturer. I bought in Nov 2011 a pair for $2.96 plus $3.99 expedited shipping with 12 month warranty from "victoryduanshop".

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-LCD-Hinges-set-14-1-Dell-Latitude-D500-D600-/230627429725?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b2774d5d

These arrived fine but were not that well made. On my left hinge, where the bottom part of the hingeis attached to the part that goes up alongside the lid there was a small crack in the the metal pressure-fitted joint. I hope that does not crack with use but no time to send them back for replacement ones! I finally got the hinges to fit after a little straightening of the two lowest brackets that attach the hinge to the lid. This is the part where the two copper grounding strips are attached. I also had to open up the holes in this part so that the screws would align. I had to use a drill in my Dremel tool to elongate the holes. The left hinge, which was the only one of mine that was broken, had more problems than the right hinge but I got it all to fit and work. Considering that this laptop is now 9 years old it is amazing that one can still buys parts. BUT if I was doing this again I would buy two pairs of hinge so that maybe I would get a left and right hinge that would be OK.

My new hinges were also stiff so I used lightweight sewing machine oil to lubricate. WD40 that others suggest you use to loosen stiff new hinges is ok but has no real residual lubrication value.

Hi Scott,

I have a Dell C-510 Latitude. The right monitor hinge broke, and I need to replace it. Is it the same replacement/repair procedure, as basically for the older models like I have?

Wow, after about six years of use my father's Dell D600 laptop is finally falling apart. I knew this was going o happen sooner of later the "C" key is already broken I don't really know how it happened. And now the right hinge has snapped of so the screen is postioned a little weird. As of now I thinking whether I should replace the hinge of just purchase I brand new laptop. Since all of the computer componets are obsolete, and this computer can't even support Windows 7.

Wow, I'm surprised how old this post is, and how much it's still used.

My wife's D620 just suffered this issue after 5 years of use. Found the parts on eBay, ordered, and am not looking forward to working with tiny screws when the parts come, but will accept the challenge.

Thanks for taking the the time to write the post, and thanks to all before me for adding all the information. You have made my weekend that much more productive by finding this info all in one place.

Thanks for this excellent guide. I was able to procure the hinges easily enough, but then realized that the frame that the left hinge screws into was broken as well. I nearly abandoned the project, but then realized that even without something to screw the hinge to, at least the post could rest in the frame hole (which wasn't broken)...and if I could replace the right hinge properly, that would offer some additional support. So I replaced them both and it works great...at least a lot better than it did with two busted hinges.

Jerry,

The pics. in the Dell service manual for the D520 (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd520/en/ug_en/parts.htm#wp1109395) look similar to the D600 - there is a hinge cover and the screen seems to go together the same, so you probably should be able to follow the procedure above. The hinges look very slightly different to the D600, but if you search the internet for Dell D520 hinges, you will find lots of sources. Good luck!

Hi Scott,

I have a D520 with this problem. Any idea the D600 hinge is interchangeable?

My D600 may be what some consider old, but it's a great, little machine. It does everything I need it to do, and it does it with speed. I was horrified when the hinges went. I didn't want a new laptop. I wanted my laptop, so I went to a computer expert to get an estimate on having the hinges replaced. They wanted $400.00! What a rip off! So I went on Ebay and found both hinges for $2.99 + $4.99 shipping, and with the help of this site, I'm going to put them on myself and save $392.02
