Movable Type 4 to be Open Sourced

Movable Type TechCrunch: Movable Type 4.0 to be open sourced with MySQL-like dual license, and Anil confirmed that it is going to be GPL. Congratulation to SixApart! I felt they somehow “lost it” back in 2004 when Movable Type 3 was released with a new license terms. What follows was a mass migration, with open source advocates like Mark Pilgrim emphasising on the issue of freedom. Is it too late for 6A to turn back and give what the community wants (although I suspect the majority of community just wants free beer not free speech)? Nevertheless, open sourcing a software project is never going to be bad thing.

It seems very hard to switch, especially with all the momentum and investment of time that people have placed on building stuff for and on WordPress. But, I guess the same can be said for Movable Type back in those days and WordPress hasn’t been flawless either. The whole “business” behind it has run into a few eyebrow-raising incidents (such as the whole pagerank scam), so perhaps at this point, it’s also a question about which group you trust more.

I’m still running our church site on MT3 (and previously MT2), and it’s been running fairly well still… so it might be exciting to go back to that and try out the new MT4 technology and user interface (a side of 6A that WordPress/Shuttle should definitely learn from!)
