Hey - awesome article. One of the major obstacles I'm having though that after I checkout a working copy of SVN, how do I connect it to my projects repository?

SVN externals works great for plugins, but not for Wordpress because it wants to put Wordpress in a sub directory of public_html (www, or whatever it is on a persons server.

Anyone know of a solution?

I have a similar setup with a couple of websites and am about to go down the same route, however, I don't like the redundancy of having the same code to be downloaded and updated for each of the websites and keeping multiple copies of the WordPress core files across the entire repository.

Do you know of a way to maybe create SVN specific symbolic links or some such approach? Maybe have a local WordPress trunk which all other websites refer to, this way they won't have to go through over the web to fetch updates and updating the common WP install is much faster (though the changes would not be pushed out automatically, after updating the common WP install, you'd still have to run svn update on the other websites). Thoughts?

Jeremy, because that's where your code base of the current revision is (in text-base dir). You don't want people to see your code, especially wp-config.php.

vdias, you can use an svn command line client or any svn client you'd like. I myself prefer smartsvn (from smartsvn.com). I also use tortoisesvn. The tools don't quite matter, it's what you do with them does. Here's a great link for svn:externals help: http://claudio.cicali.org/article/71/svnexternals-micro-howto

***Seems like it would be a good idea to add something to the Web server configuration to prevent access to anything in a .svn directory.***

What I do is upload the sites to the server using rsync, and there I use an exclude instructions so that it doesn't upload the .svn directories (nor .DS_Store, nor any cache files).

Seems like it would be a good idea to add something to the Web server configuration to prevent access to anything in a .svn directory.

For Apache, I think either a DirectoryMatch or a RewriteRule would do the trick.

RewriteRule ^.*\.svn.*$ forbidden

    Order Deny,Allow
    Deny from All

[...] Updated to WordPress 2.0.7 10 days after WordPress 2.0.6 has been released, the developers have just announced the release of WordPress 2.0.7, because of an SQL injection issue. Kudos to the dev’s for such a quick turn around, unlike some unnamed big company who would only patch on the holy Tuesday day of the month. Just updated 4 of my WP blogs with svn switch, and all FOCUSer.net blogs using a new Gentoo ebuild. However I wonder how many WP installations out there are still running the old code which contains security vulnerability?
[...] I decided to spend some time updating my blog today. I checked out the wordpress code and some plugins from svn directly instead of downloading the latest release, this way I can update to newer versions buy doing ’svn update’. I also installed the newest version of the wp-hashcash spam prevention tool. It forces browsers to do some javascript calculations using a randomly seeded number (chosen every 4 hours on the server side). If the comment doesn’t have the correct value in the form then it is rejected. I had this installed wp-hashcash previously, but there were problems with the installation, this time around I hope it works. Otherwise I’ll write it myself! We use this method for spam prevention at StreetEasy and it appears to be 100% effective so far. December 24th 2006 Posted to Uncategorized [...]
