For a text-heavy site, a fixed-width layout could be ideal. A badly-done liquid design could run way past the optimum line length of about 60 characters or so. The reader's eyes would get tired from traversing the whole width of a page with each line of text--if they don't resize their browsers to a reasonable size (which is certainly a possibility). There's also hybrid solutions like <a href="http://uwmike.com/articles/2005/05/04/jello-liquid-layout" rel="nofollow">Jello</a> or <a href="http://www.456bereastreet.com/archive/200504/fixed_or_fluid_width_elastic/" rel="nofollow">Elastic</a> layouts that combine the advantages of liquid and fixed layouts.
