I was recently in Vietnam and I was eating dinner with a New Zealand family in a typically dirty Vietnamese street shop. The young boy dropped his bit of chicken on the floor and quickly scooped it up and shoved it back in his mouth proudly proclaiming - "5 second rule"

haha - I wonder if there is a list of countries that Ban the 5 second rule :)

Scott, thanks for a fine article. It is possible that someone who eats an M'nM or for that matter a piece of chicken that was dropped on the floor will become even healthier by strengthening the immune system via exposure to a bacteria or virus. The body likes to adapt and develop antibodies to these things. So the kiasi factor is scientifically invalid here. In Australia at home where I work daily on The Internet I always "blow hard" on the dropped food before hungrily consuming it - or wash it under a tap. But I don't do that in front of visitors!
