Sydney Morning Herald reports, study finds HSC pressure is cracking our kids. It says:
The study of 320 students in this year’s HSC class uncovered deep despair, with many describing the exams as the “be-all and end-all” moment in their lives.
Two amongst the 320 were quoted by SMH.
“If I do poorly in the HSC, that means no matter what I do in life, I will do it poorly,” said Ling, 16.
Another student, 17-year-old Kim, said: “It’s just too time-consuming, life-deteriorating and fun-depleting.”
Oh. Two poor Asian kids that took HSC too seriously. Then Herald actually deciphered the key here.
Almost half the group said their parents cared more about their HSC performance than they did.
I can almost hear Mrs. Wong disciplining her kids. “Johnny! You must study hard lah. Go to all the tuition classes, get TER 99 and above, and bring good name to the Wongs, you know. Don’t be pressured but you can pick whatever course you want to do — as long as it is Medicine like our neighbour doctor Lee, or Law like uncle Chan! If you don’t get 99 and above, you will be working in a Chinese take away shop like your uncle Lim for the rest of your life!”
Well, it is a bit exaggerated, but unfortunately that kind of talk can be heard everywhere if you dropped into an Asian suburb like Hurstville. I have blogged before on Bu-Xi (Chinese). The challenge for us, Asian parents who will have an HSC student at home in 16-17 years, is to be relaxed about “getting the degree”. Fortunately for us that in Australia, it does not really matter — without a Law or Med degree, or even a university qualification, will not deprive the rest of your life.
On the other hand, whether she will trust in Jesus or not, though we do not have the ultimate control, should be the thing to worry about.
Typical Aussie view. Think government will help you? Think again. Where all these money went to after financial crash from your super? That’s right to the educated bastards. Australian education is a shit, unfortunately to you. Time is changing and “it does not really matter” actually it does matter. Don’t rely on the government, rely on you kids and education. Education is the best investment.
Fidel Castro said Education is The Freedom. I tell you even more, bit scary and unpleasant thing for you and even for me, It is better to keep uneducated crowd, rather to keep educated. Why? Because it is easier to manage this crowd…
Does your HSC really matter???
Im currently doing my HSC now, actually in about a week to be precise but after i am going to work for a year or so, i just cant go straight in to more schooling, ie. Tafe and Uni.
So what im Asking is that for me is there really any point in Stressing over it??
In my eyes i feel like its not going to make much differents!!!
