Sydney – Not that good a place to live

Sydney is in desperate shape – a list of things that need to be fixed. SMH is running a campaign for Sydney, a city that has a crumbling infrastructure. Time to move on?

I actually fear the Gold Coast is heading for a similar fate of the local council and government don’t pull their heads in and put in serious infrastructure shortly. The Gold Coast has been the fastest growing city in Australia, for I think, the last 4 or 5 years running. We’re increasing at about 50,000 to 55,000 people per year, with a current population of just under 520,000.

The transport systems aren’t in place to cater for our current load, let alone expanding at an appropriate rate. We don’t have a rail system in place at the moment and the arterial roads are being overloaded. I have to travel a small 9km to work; which if I leave home at 7.30 takes roughtly 25 minutes. The story is very different if I leave at 7.45 or 8.00 though – taking upto an hour to get to work.

I regularly wonder if monkeys run local councils.

Yeah. I used to live on the Gold Coast (1990-1994), and I usually go back there once a year. Gold Coast has changed so much beyond recognition, and might not be a good thing for those who initially planned to retire there for a peaceful life (like my parents). You can’t get to anywhere without a car. Bus is pathetic – I need to walk 30 minutes from my parents’ place to the nearest bus stop. Big shopping centres are always jam packed with people. No longer a small town… Maybe the only people who benefit are the property developers.

At least it still has (ever shrinking) space to build infrastructure. You can’t even cram in a new road in Sydney without demolishing some houses.

Hi, im moving to sydney on part of my comany’s assignment.
I had worked in San Diago for 2 years, later i’d been in Berlin for just under 2 years and now have to move again.

Although this is temporary assignemnt but do you think sydney would be a good place to live longer or may be for life.

As per my current experience, i liked germany as it felt way more organized and pecefull compared to US. But not to mention they have lots of rules to follow…

Anyway idea about general life in sydney, their transportation system, quality of life and income ratio… etc etc.
