My new blog tool

Adriaan Tijsseling has updated his excellent desktop blogging client ecto, successor of my all-time favourite Kung-Log. The 0.1.6 is the first beta version available for public testing, and it is simply one of the most powerful (and beautiful) desktop blogging tool I have ever used, both on Mac and on PC. Once it is installed, [...]

Well done, blogs4God

I was reading the latest blog entry of blogs4God on declining listing a weblog of Howard Dean, a presidential candidate of US, due to the reason that it is not historical Christianity, i.e. he overlooked the sinful nature of mankind by stating that God cannot possibly create sinners, in the circumstances of commenting on homosexuality. [...]

LIMIT in SELECT statements in Firebird

The question is, is there a MySQL/PostgreSQL equivalent of LIMIT clause in Firebird? It is very useful in situations where you don’t get to keep the database cursor over multiple requests, i.e. in some web applications. In my scenario, I just want to the database to return the most relevant n rows of result, over [...]

Drunken car (and my weekend reflection)

My car smelt full of alcohol. If I got pulled over by the police now, I am pretty sure that I will get busted just by winding down the window to let the in-car odour to be released. Or at least I will be having a hard time explaining what actually happened. It was actually [...]

A recent Postfix log on spamming attempt

I have received the following logs on my mail server regularly over the last 2-3 months, showing attempts of spammers trying to send me a junk mail. The log is generated by Postfix automatically, and send to my postmaster box.

Blank

Blank. That is what is in my mind when I tried to blog before I go to sleep, and it has been like this 2 days in a row. Here I am, on the bed, with iBook on my lap connected to the net via Airport. Kung-Log opened, and my hands rested on the keyboard. [...]

More Movies

It is a continuation from my previous blog entry. In fact I have watched more than just RoTK, but a few other movies on both cinema and DVD. I will just try to write a few sentences for each one.

Why is Broadband Expensive in Australia?

According to this thread on the Whirlpool Forums, you can get 45Mbps down stream and 3Mbps up stream ADSL with no traffic quota and cheap VoIP phone for around ¥4,138 per month, which is just a bit more than AUD$50 today. At the same time, I am paying AUD$55 per month for Swiftel‘s 512kbps/128kbps plan [...]

NCV-ESV Bible by Worldwide Bible Society

My long waited NCV-ESV Bible has finally arrived! The first time I heard about it was from an ICQ conversation with Joel from Singapore last April. It was actually quite exciting to hear a publisher combining probably two of the finest translation to date – New Chinese Version 新譯本 and English Standard Version – into [...]

Playing with Bloglines

I have been testing out Bloglines after reading Kimbro Staken’s attempt to replace NetNewsWire on Mac OS X. Currently I am using NetNewsWire Lite on Mac OS X and FeedDemon on Windows to do my news aggregation. However, NNW Lite doesn’t have many features in the non-free full version. FeedDemon, while better designed than NNW, [...]

LoTR: Return of the King

Last Christmas holiday session I watched quite a few movies. For this year, over the past week or two I have also watched a few movies in both cinemas and on the DVD. Some movies are very enjoyable, but some are just okay. I will write a bit on what I think of each movie [...]

Friendster

A friend of mine has convinced me to join that ever-so-popular Friendster, which is a network to allow you to link up with your friend’s friend’s friend’s friend. I don’t think it is going to be useful to me as I don’t even have time to keep up with my own friends. Interestingly, under your [...]

FRQ – HK names, PageRank tool, Web design mistakes, etc

Friday Five this week is in its “new year” mode. Here’s my take on the questions. What one thing are you most looking forward to . . . …today?Finishing work. …over the next week?Watching LoTR: RoTK on Saturday. …this year?Birth of little Yang in July. …over the next five years?Study in college for a least [...]

Computer hardware failure

After reading Jeremy Zawodny’s blog entry on hardware failure, it makes me felt a bit anxious about my own data. On the backup side of things, I have to confess that I have not done a good job. I am not a paranoid kind of person, and usually I just apply ad-hoc kind of solution [...]
